What is a Cabin Air Filter?

If you think that your A/C isn't running as good as it should - it could be that your Cabin Air Filter is CLOGGED. Easy fix....

The Cabin Air Filter could be effecting how the Air Conditioner unit in your vehicle is working. I had no idea, but it makes sense that if the filter is clogged the A/C unit can not cool as well as it should. The filtration system operates on the same principle as the A/C system in your house. If the filter is clogged - change it, so that you can get colder air and better air flow.
Cabin Air Filters began to appear on U.S. cars and trucks around 1995. Today more than 80 percent of all new import and domestic vehicles sold in the U.S. have a cabin air filter or a slot where one can be installed.
Americans spend more than 3.7 billion hours in traffic each year, a key factor in the automotive industry’s decision to increase the number of vehicles equipped with cabin air filtration systems.

What is a Cabin Air Filter?

Cabin Air Filters are designed to capture contaminants such as soot, dirt, pollen, and other pollutants, that enter the vehicles cabin through its heating, air conditioning and defrosting (HVAC) system.
Cabin Air Filters also prevent leaves, dirt, bugs and other debris from entering the HVAC system and  protects the system. If improperly maintained it could eventually damage the HVAC system.
 They may be called;
    pollen filters,
    dust filters,
    car air conditioning filters,
    ACC filters,
    breather filters,
    micro filters,
    micron air filters,
    interior air filters,
    and interior ventilation filters.
Many cars are running with dirty, clogged cabin filters and we may not even be aware of it.

Where is the cabin air filter in my vehicle?

Car manufacturers "hide" the cabin air filter in various locations, making them difficult to find and to service.
Cabin air filters are found behind the glove box, under the dash, and under the hood. Some Filters are easier to locate and change, while others require a bit of dismantling to get to.
Users should check their vehicle’s owner manual or ask a service technician for details regarding their specific vehicle.

How often should the Cabin Air Filter be changed?

Cabin Air Filters gather debris, soot and pollen.
One place to find out is to check your owner's manual or you can check with your local service technician. Rule of thumb is, once a year or at least every 15,000 miles.

If you are unsure as to whether you have a Cabin Air Filter in your vehicle - Ask your Service Adviser or a Technician. If you need a Cabin Air Filter, check with your Parts Department or schedule an appointment with your Service Department to have it replaced. If you think that your A/C isn't running as good as it should - it could be that your Cabin Air Filter is CLOGGED. Easy fix....

Keep it between the lines,
Happy Motoring.

2017 Buick LaCrosse - America's New Luxury Sedan

The completely redesigned 2017 Buick LaCrosse is now a legitimate luxury car, not because advertisements say it is, but for the way it drives, the way it looks, and the way it invites you inside.
The 2017 Buick LaCrosse is not your "Old School Buick". This redesigned and engineered LaCrosse is full of life, lending it to be competitive with BMW 5 series and Lexus ES 350.
This LaCrosse doesn't handle like a tuna boat, it handles the corners with crisp handling and steering response.
The chief engineer on this project was Jeff Yanssens who has past generation Corvette-engineering ties. Jeff has brought that Corvette feel to this new Buick Lacrosse.  Changes include a stronger and lighter body structure, a five-link rear suspension system and  advanced sound deadening materials to reduce road noise and create a comfortable, quiet interior.

The LaCrosse comes with a smooth running 3.6-liter V-6 producing 310 hp with a strong torque output of 282 lb ft. turning the wheels with an  eight-speed transmission. Standard front wheel drive and available all wheel drive.

Cadillac's Super Cruise helps defeat sleeping at the wheel.

It is not a wonder as to why we tend to be a bit overwhelmed each day, with all that is required of us on a daily basis. Does your day sound something like:
Get up early
Work out
Take care of the dog
Take care of the kids
Get everyone up and out the door
You get out the door
What did you forget?

Have your list
Have your phone, is it charged
What else?:
How many meetings do you have today
Where are they
What time are you getting home
Are you meeting up with friends/family tonight
What class/meetings do you have this week after work
What about dinner
Where will everyone be tonight

Tired yet?  What if while you are driving, your eyes get a little heavy. You know you can fight it. Power down the window, turn up the radio, chew some gum, drink some coffee. Sometimes all of that just isn't enough. The power of sleep overcomes you, and the inevitable happens. You crash. Whether anyone is hurt or not, it is a dreadful event.

The automotive world is all about the autonomous and semi-autonomous driving technology and General Motors has been working on a Super Cruise system in hopes to be ahead of its domestic competitors and cater to consumers who increasingly are looking for automated driving-assistance features.
The Super Cruise’s eye-tracking tech will enable the system to better monitor whether the driver is paying attention or not. This system is designed to work even when the driver’s head is obscured by, say, sunglasses or a ball cap. The system reads the eye socket and nose to determine whether the driver is alert and looking at the road.

Super Cruise software can detect if a driver is dozing off or not watching the road, and uses audible and visual alerts to grab the person’s attention. If the alerts don’t work, a representative with OnStar  will activate the vehicle’s intercom and communicate with the driver. If the driver still doesn’t respond, the car will pull over on the side of the highway and stop.
Super Cruise driver monitoring is one piece of GM’s approach to a safer self-driving platform. Super Cruise will be limited to highways that have detailed map information available; if the driver leaves the highway, Super Cruise shuts down.

Super Cruise is expected to launch with the 2017 Cadillac CT6, but GM has previously stated it will delay the technology should it require further refinements.

Keep it between the lines,
Be safe.

Cut your Tire Costs

If you drive and own a car, truck or SUV you've been through the sticker shock of pricing tires.
Why do they cost so darn much?
There are two sets of factors to keep in mind about tires.

1] Manage and maintain the tires you have to last as long as possible.

Manage and maintaining your tires:

  • Check your tire treads
  • Keep them on a rotation schedule
  • If uneven wear patterns develop, have the front end checked for problems with your shocks, tie rods, axle bearings, and CV joints. They can all effect your tire wear. You can most often feel it in the way your vehicle is handling and steering
  • If you have hit pot holes or curbs hard, you may need to check your alignment.
  • Monitor your tire pressures. This is the leading cause of badly worn tires.

2] Know how and when to shop for new tires.

Here are a few ways to cut the cost down:

  • Buy 4 tires at once...you save the most this way. Manufacturers offer good rebates when you purchase 4 tires. The rebate can add up to the price of 1 tire.
  • Shop smart. Doing research can save you money. Use Tire Price Match Guarantees along with rebates to get the best price available. Manufacturers offer some of the best rebates on holidays.
  • Don't buy CHEAP tires.. they are cheap for a reason
  • Don't spend too much either. Fancy wheels and tires can be over the top expensive.
  • Don't assume original equipment is the best. Manufacturers may put OEM tires on that will suit the vehicle from Vermont to Arizona conditions. Not necessarily the conditions you drive in. A different tire may be better suited for you.

As always,
Keep it between the lines.

Cadillac's new Crossover | Introducing the Cadillac XT5

Farewell Cadillac SRX you have been a wonderful crossover, but your time is done. Once Cadillac’s best-selling luxury mid-size crossover (released in 2004), has run its course. Set to take its place is the newly unveiled Cadillac XT5, one of Cadillac’s four new crossovers that will bear the XT badge in the coming years.

The XT5 is the second new vehicle released under Cadillac’s new unified classification. The recently released CT6, Cadillac’s new luxury sedan, carries the CT name designation for cars. While Cadillac’s new crossover vehicles will carry the XT label. The XT5 will replace the current crossover, the SRX, with lighter and more efficient materials, more room, a new V6 engine, transmission and shifter, chassis and new technology, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XT5’s exterior design is modernized, featuring a more aggressive stance, well-rounded presence and sharper lines. While its basic shape and proportion looks similar, the XT5 is larger and wider than the SRX.

When in Drive or Reverse, available Surround Vision provides a bird’s-eye view of your vehicle and the areas immediately surrounding it. This view, projected on the Cadillac CUE screen, gives you a brand new perspective that helps to reduce blind spots and increase your awareness. The available Rear Camera Mirror streams a live, unobstructed view of what’s behind you directly through the rearview mirror. This feature offers 300 percent more vision than an ordinary mirror and it can revert back to normal with the flip of a switch.

The Cadillac XT5 has striking horizontal lines that give it a serious and sporty look. The front end has shorter headlights, large LED daytime running lights. The side profile is longer and more level lines. The rear has some featured design upgrades as well.
The cabin is light, spacious, simple and elegant with strong horizontal lines. The dash is covered in cut-and-sewn pieces, some with both leather and Alcantara contrasting materials. It’s clear that the team worked hard to reduce clutter and create a more refined space. Comfort and practicality are evident as well; rear legroom has been increased by 3.2” and the rear seat reclines and slides forward and backward.

The 3.6L V6 Engine with Eight Speed Automatic Transmission delivers effortless acceleration that takes you to highway speeds quietly and smoothly, while the responsive handling keeps you feeling firmly in control. A smooth ride that you control. Real Time Damping Suspension monitors road and vehicle inputs to help reduce vibrations and maintain a smooth ride over rough roads. And with Driver Select Mode, you can choose between three distinct driving feels: Touring Mode for everyday driving; Snow/AWD Mode for safe handling in inclement weather; and Sport Mode for an exceptionally engaging experience.

The XT5 is 278 pounds lighter than the SRX. (Competitively, it weighs 695 pounds less than the Mercedes-Benz GLE, and 100 pounds less than the Audi Q5. The XT5 is set to compete with the likes of the Lexus RX, BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE-Class.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is in stock now at Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC Trucks.

Why and Where of Memorial Day

THE MUFFLED drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No more on Life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few.
On Fame's eternal camping-ground 5
Their silent tents are spread,
And Glory guards, with solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead.
Bivouac Of The Dead, by Theodore O'Hara
Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of Summer, pool parties, traveling, vacations, outdoor barbecues, the gathering of friends and of families.
There is nothing wrong with an extra long weekend or a paid day off from work.
Did we forget the reasoning behind it all?
Memorial Day or Decoration Day as it was once called, is a time for us as a nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.
The first grand  observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery.
Although the name and date of the observance of Memorial Day has changed over the years, it is still a day to honor our fallen soldiers. Those fought, sacrificed and gave their lives for us so that we as a nation could remain free. That is the least we can do to remember and honor them.
A true patriot Daniel Serik writes:

On this Day all will have an opportunity to Honor in Remembrance those that have laid down their lives for Freedom throughout the world. I often ponder their courage, their selflessness; how they endured their last moment of life. I can define courage and selflessness, but I know nothing of a warrior's last breath. I am sure the brother or sister that cradled him or her knows. What I do know is that another valiant son or daughter of America is lost. Another family is stricken with abysmal grief. How do they celebrate Memorial Day? I believe these brave souls, be the warrior or rescue swimmer, are worthy of an Hour of Honor.

Unfortunately, far too many act as if it is just a day to shop or party. You can judge this by the few homes that place a Flag. Be that as it may. I and other Patriots will assemble to Honor those that have made the Supreme Sacrifice. This is our debt to them, it is the very least we can do. We share in the joys of America, we must also share in the heartaches. To give an hour is nothing compared to what has been lost. I encourage all to attend in this Hour of Honor, your hearts will be lifted. As Americans this is our duty, they fulfilled theirs!

How much do you know about Soybeans?

How much do you know about SoyBeans?

Information gathered for you by Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC

SoyBeans aren’t just for eating.
Bayer and Ashland have developed soy-resin body panels that currently are being used on John Deere tractors. These panels are dramatically lighter and more durable than the steel units they replace, and they're also more flexible and easier to paint, so we suspect it's only a matter of time before similar pieces find their way onto passenger cars and trucks.

Biodiesel — Fuel for diesel engines can be produced from soybean oil by a simple process called transesterification. This process removes the glycerin from the oil, leaving soy biodiesel.  Soy biodiesel is cleaner burning than petroleum-based diesel oil.  Its use reduces particulate emissions,
Soy oil produces an environmentally friendly solvent that safely and rapidly removes oil from creeks, streams anand it is non-toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly.

Bio-composites are building materials made from recycled newspaper and soybeans. They replace other products traditionally made from wood, such as furniture, flooring, and countertops.

Particleboard, laminated plywood and finger-jointed lumber are made with soy-based wood adhesives.

Soy products are also found in many popular brands of home and commercial carpet, and in auto upholstery applications.d shorelines without harming people, animals and the environment.

Soy is an ingredient in many industrial lubricants, solvents, cleaners and paints.

Soy-based lubricants are as good as petroleum-based lubricants, but can withstand higher heat. More importantly, they are non-toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly.

Soy-based hydraulic fluid and rail flange lubricants are among the more recent products developed with check-off funds.

Candles made with soybean oil burn longer but with less smoke and soot.

SoyInk is superior to petroleum-based inks because soy ink is not toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly, and it cleans up easily.

Soy crayons made by the Dixon Ticonderoga Company replace the petroleum used in regular crayons with soy oil making them non-toxic and safer for children.

Soybeans in our seats.

Soy based foams are currently being
developed for use in coolers, refrigerators, automotive interiors and even footwear.  Beginning in 2007, vehicles rolled off the production line with soy foam in the seats.  New uses in the automotive and equipment industry followed, including lubricants, body parts, interiors and seating.

North Carolina Historical Highway Marker A-70
“With the boll weevil taking its toll on North Carolina’s cotton industry, the Elizabeth City Oil and Fertilizer Company, incorporated to manufacture cottonseed oil and other cotton by-products, tried its hand at a new commodity on December 13, 1915. At that time, under the management of William Thomas Culpepper, the company crushed approximately 20,000 bushels of soybeans, generating the first commercially produced domestic soybean oil in the country. The manufacture of the soybean oil was completed without a single alteration in existing equipment. Both the oil and the residual “cake,” usually ground into meal, were highly marketable. Other oil mills, in towns such as Winterville, New Bern, Farmville, and Wilson, began working with soybean oil shortly thereafter. The advent of domestic soybean processing made the easily grown plant popular throughout North Carolina.

The soybean was first planted in America in the late 1800s as forage for livestock. In 1904, George Washington Carver discovered that the soybean was a good source of protein and oil. He also learned, in experimenting with crop rotation, that planting soybeans for two years actually helped improve the soil conditions for later cotton crops. Following such research, soybean production increased. The plants flourish in North Carolina’s hot, humid summers, and as of 2002, the state ranks fifteenth in the nation in soybean yields. At the time of the first processing in Elizabeth City, North Carolina was the leading producer of the legume.”
The oil processing plant was located on property at the corner of Ehringhaus and McMorrine Streets in Elizabeth City. It is no longer standing.

North Carolina was the first state in America to grow soybeans commercially on a large scale, and the first to crush domestically grown soybeans. North Carolina was America's leading state in soybean seed production and acreage from the
early 1900s until 1924. This early pioneering work proved to both soybean growers and crushers in other states that this new crop had great potential, and thus was a key factor in the growth of the soybean industry in America.
The Early Years, to 1899. It is not known exactly when the soybean was introduced to North Carolina, but it was probably between 1870 and 1881. Tom Byrd, a journalist, reported in 1965 that C.B. Williams, the state's great soybean pioneer, once said that "The first soybeans coming to North Carolina had been brought to Hyde County about 1870 by an old sea captain who obtained them in the Orient. They later spread to other coastal locations." Hartwig (1981) mentioned this same event, without citation. Yet Williams made no mention of this key incident in his many extensive writings on soybeans in North Carolina.
Frank W. Hollowell Jr. of Elizabeth City reported in 1982 that in about 1880 his grandfather, Christopher Wilson Hollowell, planted soybeans on his "Bay Side" plantation in Pasquotank County, in the northeast corner of North Carolina. These soybeans were obtained from China by a friend. Mr. Hollowell died in 1892.
